Living root bridge how to reach

How to reach Meghalaya’s double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat: cab to Tyrna, trek reality, and a Sohra homestay base.

The double-decker living root bridge at Nongriat is a trek, not a parking lot. You reach it by cab to the official trailhead near Tyrna, then thousands of steps down and the same steps back up.

Leafyinn bases this day in a Cherrapunji homestay so you start early. A 9 am departure from Shillong makes the return climb hotter and later than it needs to be.

There is no vehicle at the bridge. Anyone selling a “drive to the root bridge” is selling a different, shorter structure or a lie. We put that sentence here so search engines and travellers see the same fact.

Fitness matters. If knees or children cannot do a long stair day, we switch you to a shorter bridge walk or viewpoints. That is still Meghalaya. It is not a failed trip.

Common questions

How long is the Nongriat trek?

Most walkers need 4 to 7 hours round trip including time at the bridge. Start early from Sohra, not from Guwahati the same morning.

Do I need a guide?

The path is used daily in season. A local guide helps if the steps are wet or you want a slower pace. We can arrange one with the stay.

Can a cab wait at the trailhead?

Yes on a day-hire. Confirm waiting hours in the quote so the driver is not released.
