Shillong to Cherrapunji — locals say Sohra — is a short map distance and a slower road. About 53 km, usually one and a half to two hours, longer when cloud sits on the Mawkdok stretch.
This is not a highway sprint. The cab is for viewpoints, Nohkalikai, and dropping you at a cliff-side homestay without a second transfer. We prefer drivers who already know which hairpins flood in July.
Many guests keep the vehicle for a Sohra day: waterfalls in the morning, a cave or a short walk, back to the stay before the afternoon white-out. A point-to-point drop only makes sense if you are sleeping in Sohra and walking the next day.
If Nongriat is on the plan, the cab stops at the Tyrna / official trailhead parking — not at the double-decker bridge. The bridge is a trek. We say that in the quote so nobody expects a car at the roots.
Common questions
How far is Shillong to Cherrapunji by taxi?
About 53 km. Budget 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on cloud, roadwork, and photo stops at Mawkdok.
Can the cab wait while we visit Nohkalikai?
Yes on a day-hire. A one-way drop will not wait. Tell us whether you want point-to-point or a Sohra sightseeing cab.
Is Cherrapunji the same as Sohra?
Sohra is the Khasi name. Signage and homestays use both. Same town, same road from Shillong.
